We have good knowledge of the hunting and fishing around the Nicola Valley and are well-qualified to give advice to the less knowledgeable. Fishing in the area is best in the spring and early summer for rainbow trout. It slows down in mid-summer and picks up again in the fall when the water cools a bit.
We have over 100 lakes in the area that are stocked with rainbow trout, Eastern brook trout and kokanee. The stream fishing doesn't start until June or July depending on the particular stream and you are restricted to using a single barbless hook in all streams and some lakes.
Fly fishing is gaining in popularity each year and the chironomid fishing is gaining in popularity daily as people realize that chironomid fishing is the most productive way to fish for trout.
Lakes in and around the Nicola Valley produce Rainbow Trout to 16 pounds every year. They are the exception, not the rule, but nevertheless, it indicates strongly that we have some trophy fisheries in the area.
An hour's drive from Merritt will get you into a sturgeon fishing hole on the Fraser River where fish to 10 ft. are caught and released almost daily with unforgettable consequences to the angler. We live in a fishing paradise and we do have a lake a day for as long as you stay.
At Ponderosa sports we carry supplies for all the good fishing around the area and look forward to helping you take part in the fun and sport. Your fishing stories are welcome.
